Hiking in the Sawtooth X vs the Sawtooth II
So, you're thinking about hiking in an Oboz Sawtooth. You may have noticed that this iconic shoe comes in two different styles: Sawtooth X and Sawtooth II. Both styles are designed for comfort, support, and longevity and made for adventures from day hikes to light backpacking. We're here to break down the similarities and differences between these two shoes so you can choose the perfect style for your next adventure.
What's the same?
While the Sawtooth X and the Sawtooth II have a few notable differences, they share many similarities.
Structure
Both styles of the Sawtooth feature a structured heel cup, sculpted midfoot, and a wider toe box.
Material
Both shoes are crafted using Leather Working Group Nubuck leather, chosen to help reduce our impact on the planet. Both hiking shoes also come with abrasion resistant uppers that help to protect your feet and transfer moisture out of the shoe.
Insoles
Oboz O FIT Insole® are used in both styles of the Sawtooth. Oboz insoles maximize stability with a supportive arch and structured heel cup with heel and forefoot cushioning pods.
Waterproof & Non-Waterproof Versions
Sawtooth X and Sawtooth II are both available in waterproof and non-waterproof styles. Oboz B-Dry waterproof and breathable liners use a blend of recycled post-industrial scraps and new materials. For more information on choosing between waterproof and non-waterproof, check out this blog post.
What's different?
Let's dive into what sets the Sawtooth X and Sawtooth II apart from one another.
Fit
Starting with fit, the Sawtooth X model is created using gender specific lasts (a tool used to shape the hiking shoe, contributing to the overall fit) for men and women, whereas the Sawtooth II is made with a more traditional and generous hiking fit.
Midsole
The Sawtooth II features a dual-density EVA midsole and nylon shank. This helps support your foot on uneven trails, while maintaining comfort levels on easier, soft terrain.
The Sawtooth X differs from the II in this way. Built with ACT+ dual-density EVA rubberized midsoles, offering high energy efficiency with a cushioned heel, perfect for steep climbs, technical descents, slick mud, and loose dirt.
Outsole
The outsole package on the Sawtooth II is made for gripping softer trail and has a traditional rubber compound for a firmer ride. In contrast, the Sawtooth X features Trail Tread rubber in an updated geometric pattern designed to help shed mud and improve traction making for a more performance focused ride.
To put things in perspective, we'd equate the Sawtooth II to a steadfast and reliable pickup truck, whereas the Sawtooth X is built on a platform designed for bigger adventures like an offroad 4x4.
