During the middle of peak training for a 100-mile race, it wasn’t uncommon to wake up at 4:30 AM for an early start in the mountains. Training for the San Diego 100 was underway, and a 20-mile training session was on deck. I sat in the driver’s seat of my SUV. The heater was on full blast. Honestly, I didn’t want to take a step outside. Before we get back to that, let’s talk about the shoes I wore on that rainy but extraordinary adventure: the Katabatic LT GTX.
Oboz Footwear joined forces with Flickr to bring you a competition aimed at capturing those unforgettable adventure memories. We are inspiring photographers to take a hike, connect with nature, and capture the special moments along the way through an immersive outdoor event and global photo contest.
I spend most of the year patiently waiting for—and training for—summer trips. I had seen friends hike the 38-mile Trans-Catalina Trail and decided that this year, I’d shake off my Colorado snow and hike it myself! The TCT winds across Catalina Island, located just off the coast of Southern California in the Pacific Ocean. Catalina is a special place—inhabited for around 7,000 years, used as a filming location for over 500 films, TV shows, and documentaries, and home to a variety of diverse ecosystems.

With an estimated 83% of the U.S. population living in urban areas, there are millions of people who feel like connecting with nature and finding ways to get outside is a major challenge. And when you open social media only to see three of your friends on an afternoon hike in the mountains or escaping with their dog to the forest for an evening walk, you can’t help but look around and wonder, “why can’t I have that?”
Winter, with its perfect sparkle of fresh snowfall and the serene quiet of a snow-covered landscape, is one of my favorite times to be outdoors. When I first moved to New York, I was thrilled to hike in the Catskills and didn't want to halt my hikes just because of the snow.
As we enter the second month of the new year, there are many people around the world making checklists, working out, and anxiously awaiting their first steps on a long trail that they’ve been thinking of - for maybe their whole life.
