To honor our commitment to doing better for the planet we created the Oboz Trails for Trees Challenge. This challenge isn’t about how far or fast you can hike, but how often you go. Each time you lace up and hit the trail for at least one mile, Oboz will plant a tree.
Bunsen stands like a sentinel over the northwestern parts of Yellowstone and offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the region. One can see Electric Peak, Sepulcher Mountain, Antler Peak, Mount Holmes, as well as spectacular vistas of Mammoth, Gardiner Canyon, Blacktail Deer Plateau and the Yellowstone River Valley in the surrounding flats below. It is a steep climb over switchbacks for 2.2 miles, but it is very doable with patience and rest breaks at some incredible points along the way.
During the middle of peak training for a 100-mile race, it wasn’t uncommon to wake up at 4:30 AM for an early start in the mountains. Training for the San Diego 100 was underway, and a 20-mile training session was on deck. I sat in the driver’s seat of my SUV. The heater was on full blast.
